( one time, eddie asked a guy for a ride.

admittedly, there are better ways to get from point to point b without slogging through the muck that is literal coercion. but desperate times, it's a one-off thing, it'll never happen again β€” all the niceties eddie's been serving himself on a platter since his journey with venom began. because of venom, he can't be in america, so he's off to canada. he's made it as far as north dakota, which is pretty impressive considering their distinct lack of budget. final stretch, get out of the country, lay low, be free.

gator's involvement is fortuitous. like eddie, he has someone who brings up the word 'loyalty' for him. he'd get where eddie is coming from, probably, if eddie explained everything, laid it all out end-to-end, but no one has time for that. gator might not even be all that bad, but they really don't have time for deep, thoughtful character assessment, so they're going to shove that thought way, way down.

packing is shoving things into a backpack and, boom, being done with. it's pretty efficient, carrying next to nothing. )

Ready within the half, Deputy.

( eddie may have been bluffing about the extent of his research into the town, but it worked.

all towns have their secrets; gator just happened to give him an in, and eddie said the right things for once. fargo's not the only place with criminal activity running through it, but it's the town eddie landed in. tillman junior protects tillman senior, tillman senior keeps himself busy with all sorts of savory things. no one's so protective without reason. do the math, follow the trail. if eddie stuck close to roy around for a bit, he's sure he'd find something. sleuthing, stalking, it was his claim to fame in his heyday. and with venom around, getting access to closed-door conversations is that much easier.

the story he'd threatened gator with doesn't exist, not yet.

some part of eddie was looking forward to creating it. he misses the chase, the hunt for the truth, overturning stones to find what lies beneath. it hasn't been too long since the cletus case, but this feels different. bigger. everyone knew cletus cassidy; no one knows fargo, north dakota. the confident part of him that hasn't been worn down by weeks of sleeping on park benches and strangers' couches still takes pride in the idea that one of his pieces could put a town on the map.

what eddie sends is the directions to a gas station, nice and nondescript.

he's not happy to know there's another guy along for this trip. it feels like more of a liability, more room for messing up, but he's got his ride, so he'll deal. )
